Free Parking at The Fire Museum of Maryland

Visiting the Fire Museum of Maryland comes with a major perk: completely free parking.
The Fire Museum of Maryland would not function without the service and dedication of our volunteers.  Retired firefighters, historians, woodworkers, historic re-enactors, registrars, and mechanics all play a vital role in our ability to maintain, preserve, and restore our collection and buildings.

Today is #NationalTakeYourDogToWorkDay and we were lucky enough to have all our canine friends with us today.

The first is our Assistant Director's Dog, who is named Pickles. She is a more recent visitor the museum so if you have not seen her in our office yet, that is understandable. The second is our curator's and registrar's dog named Chester, who has been visiting the museum for a few times, and if you stop by our office for any reason there is a good chance Chester will be there. The last is Spot who permanently lives at the museum (not a real dog, but is in our hearts), he is decked out for our 250 event next Friday July 3rd.

Speaking of dogs, we often get asked why the Dalmatian is specifically associated with firefighting? This is one of those things without any concrete proof but there are a couple of theories. Dalmatians were already a common breed of what was called a "Coach Dog". This meant that they would ride along stage coaches and wagons that were being pulled by horses, they helped to supposedly calm the horses as well as protect them from either wolves or horse thieves. When firefighters started using horses for steam pumpers, they brought the coach dogs along with them. But why Dalmatians and not some other breed of coach dog? Dalmatians suffer from deafness more than any other dog breed, so it is theorized that when the steam whistle went off on the engine, Dalmatians less frequently reacted to it.

There is also the other theory of that's how you find the fire hydrants 😉 #FireFactFriday
